Now that the year 2023 is behind us, we can say with certainty that it was marked by the progress of artificial intelligence. A lot has been said and written about artificial intelligence and it has certainly slowly found its way into almost all industries.

It is not difficult to conclude that artificial intelligence will be the focus of the technology industry in the future as well.

Here are the 5 key trends that we can expect in 2024 from artificial intelligence.

1. Generative Artificial Intelligence – Everyday Automation

As generative artificial intelligence finds its way into more and more applications we use every day, from search engines to office software and communication tools, people will realize its potential. It’s like having a super smart personal assistant on hand 24/7, making us more efficient, faster and more productive.

Most importantly – by leaving our daily tasks (gathering information, planning, managing compliance, organizing ideas, structuring projects) to artificial intelligence, we will have more time to exploit human skills. We will spend more time in a creative way, exploring new ideas or interacting with people.

2. Cyber Resilience

Research suggests that one in two companies has been the victim of a successful cyber attack in the past three years, and the cost of these attacks to the industry is expected to grow to more than $10 trillion by the end of 2024. Due to this rapidly growing threat, technology solutions designed to strengthen defenses and providing a fighting chance is high on the list of things any organization must have.

Cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, and competition is intensifying to bring to market solutions that take advantage of revolutionary technologies such as artificial intelligence. Therefore, cyber resilience will become an increasingly prominent trend throughout 2024 in business and consumer technology.

Automation of cyber defenses through artificial intelligence and machine learning, integrated frameworks that combine security measures with continuity protocols and awareness of social factors from social engineering attacks to PR ‘firefighting’ are key elements of any cyber resilience strategy.

3. Quantum Computing

Quantum computers are capable of performing a huge number of calculations simultaneously using elements of quantum physics.

Banks and financial services organizations hope to improve the power of AI systems developed in recent years for fraud detection, risk management and high-frequency trading.

This year, we may begin to see the benefits as quantum computing is applied to a variety of fields, including drug discovery, genome dissection, cryptography, meteorology, materials science, optimization of complex systems such as traffic flow through large cities.

4. The Battle Over Copyright

What kind of potential problems we are dealing with can best be seen on the example of the recent lawsuit filed by the New York Times against Microsoft and OpenAI for unauthorized training of artificial intelligence using their content. Actress Sara Silverman also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, while Getty Images filed a lawsuit against Stability AI. Andres Guadamuz, a copyright expert, believes that next year there will be one or two rulings that could “clear things up” a bit about the relationship between AI training and copyright, although he thinks that it will take up to five years for things to be fully settled.

5. Regulation and Legislation

As artificial intelligence becomes more and more prevalent, the need for strong legislative frameworks grows. Countries around the world are working to develop and harmonize regulations governing the ethical use of artificial intelligence, risk mitigation and transparency. The European Data Protection Board has launched a task force to coordinate enforcement actions against ChatGPT, and the US Federal Trade Commission is investigating OpenAI.

The trend points to a growing global consensus on the responsible development and implementation of AI.

However, the US lags behind the EU, which is making rapid progress in erecting safeguards around the development and commercialization of artificial intelligence.

As we sail through this unexplored territory, we know one thing for sure – 2024 will not be boring. So get ready – it’s going to be another fascinating journey!

Let’s be open-minded and ready to adapt to everything that comes our way.

Artificial intelligence will shape our world in ways we have yet to fully understand!
